Cladding & Weatherproofing
External walls and roofs that keep weather out. Section 7 covers cladding systems; Part H2 of Volume Two sets the performance requirement.
Overview
The performance requirement (H2) is that the building must resist the entry of water from the outside. Section 7 gives the deemed-to-satisfy paths — wall cladding systems, roof cladding (sheet metal, tiles), flashings around openings, and roof drainage via gutters and downpipes sized to AS/NZS 3500.3.
Key Clauses to expand
- Part 7.1 — Scope and application
- Part 7.2 — Roof coverings (AS 1562, AS 2050)
- Part 7.3 — Sarking (AS 4200)
- Part 7.4 — Gutters and downpipes (AS/NZS 3500.3)
- Part 7.5 — Wall cladding
On-site Checklist to expand
- Cladding system rated for wind classification
- Sarking (where required) installed correctly — lapped, supported
- Flashings at all penetrations and openings
- Weep holes and cavity drainage in masonry veneer
- Gutter and downpipe sizing per catchment area
- Box gutters sized and falls correct
Common Gotchas to expand
- Direct-fix cladding in climate zones that need a cavity
- Missing sill flashing under window
- Insufficient downpipes for roof area (rule of thumb: one per 100 m²)
- Sarking pulled tight — needs sag/lap to drain
- Vapour permeability mismatch (vapour-permeable wrap behind a closed cladding)
