Installation of roof tiles

Installation requirements for concrete and terracotta roof tiles.

Overview

AS 2050 covers the installation of profiled roof tiles. It sets minimum and maximum pitch, batten spacing, fixing patterns (varies by wind classification), underlay requirements, and detailing at hips, ridges, valleys and penetrations.

Key Requirements

  • Minimum pitch (typically 15–20 degrees depending on tile profile).
  • Batten material and spacing.
  • Fixing pattern based on wind classification — perimeter tiles always fixed; field tiles per schedule.
  • Sarking required in certain climate zones and wind classifications.
  • Ridge and hip detailing.

How it's used in the NCC

Called up by Part 7.2 of the Housing Provisions for tiled roofs.

Practical Notes

  • Common failure: insufficient tile clipping at perimeters in high-wind areas.
  • Sarking sag and lap is often missed — needs the right install detail to actually drain.
