Design and installation of sheet roof and wall cladding
Installation of metal sheet roofing and wall cladding.
Overview
AS 1562 covers sheet metal roof and wall cladding — the corrugated and trapezoidal profiles common across Australia. It sets fixing patterns, lap requirements, side and end laps, and the relationship between profile, span and wind classification. Part 1 covers metal; Part 3 covers plastic.
Key Requirements
- Fixing pattern matched to wind classification.
- Minimum end laps and side laps for the profile.
- Compatibility of fasteners with cladding material (avoid galvanic corrosion).
- Flashings and roof penetrations detailed correctly.
How it's used in the NCC
Called up in Part 7.2 of the Housing Provisions for sheet roof coverings.
Practical Notes
- Roof pitch limits exist for some profiles — too shallow and capillary action defeats the lap.
- Don't mix copper flashings with zincalume sheeting (galvanic reaction).
Where to obtain
The full text of AS 1562 is published by Standards Australia and must be purchased — typical price A$150–400 per part. Always work from the current edition referenced in the NCC, not an older one.
