Design for access and mobility — General requirements for access
Dimensions and details for accessible buildings: doors, corridors, ramps, sanitary facilities.
Overview
AS 1428.1 defines the geometry of accessible design — clear door widths, corridor widths, ramp gradients, circulation spaces at fixtures, grabrail positions and slip resistance. It applies to public buildings under the Disability (Access to Premises) Standards, and is referenced for some metrics in residential Livable Housing.
Key Requirements
- Minimum clear door opening widths.
- Corridor and circulation space dimensions.
- Ramp gradients, landings, kerbs and handrails.
- Accessible sanitary facility layouts.
- Slip resistance and tactile ground surface indicators.
How it's used in the NCC
Primarily a Volume One (Class 2–9) standard, but referenced for some dimensions in Livable Housing Part H8 of Volume Two.
Practical Notes
- For Class 1a houses, H8 is the primary reference — AS 1428.1 is consulted only where H8 points to it.
- If you also design Class 2 or 3 buildings, this is the document you'll live in.
Where to obtain
The full text of AS 1428.1 is published by Standards Australia and must be purchased — typical price A$150–400 per part. Always work from the current edition referenced in the NCC, not an older one.
